Winter/Spring Session 

Hockey Academy is a skating enrichment program through the SFFSC. Athletes in this program will work with coaches each week on strengthening their skating skills as well as balance, on-ice agility, power, and speed to help them become stronger hockey players.

Full Sessions 

Wednesday Class (16 Week Full Session: Jan 12 - May 4)

Class Descriptions

Hockey 1 - 2 (Beginner Hockey/Basic Hockey)

- Learn to Skate USA Hockey Curriculum –

Skaters in this class should be able to stand and move forward on their own. If skaters are brand new to skating please sign them up for Snow Plow 1 or Basic 1 in the LTS program.

This class is designed for young and new hockey skaters. Athletes will focus on forward skating fundamentals. (Fwd gliding, on two feet and one foot, weight transfers and stops.)

Backward skating skills will also be introduced and practiced. (Backward skating and gliding on two feet, stops and transitions)

Hockey skates and helmet required. No other gear needed.

Target Class Ratio is 8 – 1.

Hockey 3 - 4 (Intermediate Hockey)

- Learn to Skate USA Hockey/ USA Hockey Curriculum -

These skaters should have strong forward skating skills and be able to skate efficiently backward.

Athletes will focus on developing backward skating skills and fluid use of forward skating. (backward double c -cuts, backward crossovers, inside and outside edges, pivots, alternating directions, and stops.)

Hockey patterns and on ice courses will be utilized to work on multiple skills.

Target class Ratio is 8 - 1

Advanced Hockey (Mites & Above)

- USA Hockey Curriculum -

These skaters have strong and consistent forward and backward skating skills.

Athletes in this class will work on agility and precision with their forward and backward skating, multiple transition styles from forward to backward as well as backward to forward, edge control, stride efficiency and other advanced skating skills.

Hockey patterns, stations, and on ice courses will be utilized to work on multiple skills.

Target class Ratio is 8 - 1

Power Hockey (Intermediate Hockey Level and Above)

This class is designed for hockey players at the intermediate level and above.

Athletes in this class will work on speed, power, and endurance as well as agility while skating forward and backward. This is a fast-paced class used to get their heart rates up and keep them moving and sweating. The first week of the class is a timed skating obstacle course. The final week the athletes will run the course again to compare their start time and their end time.

Hockey patterns, stations, and on ice courses will be utilized to work on multiple skills.

Target class Ratio is 12 - 1

Adult Hockey

Hockey skating skills class for adults!

This class will be a slower-paced skating skills class. 

Designed specifically for 18+ skaters/players who would like additional time and practice working on forward and backward skating, balance, edges, transitions and efficiency.

Hockey skates required but no other gear needed.

Stick and Structure * New * (Hockey 3 - 4/ Intermediate Hockey and Above)

This is a new 15 minute class designed to focus on the structure and posture of Hockey skaters as they skate with and without a stick and puck. Classes will vary between specific stick skill exercises and balance/posture drills.

Class has a maximum class capacity of 6 skaters.

Hockey Skills Practice * New * (All levels)

This is an open practice ice opportunity specifically for Hockey players. This is an opportunity for hockey skaters to get additional open practice to be used independently or in conjunction with a private lesson coach. Pucks will only be allowed on the later practice session (unless used during a private lesson). Tennis balls will be available during the first practice session time in place of pucks.

 

Important Membership Information

All Hockey Academy skaters are considered full members of the Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club, and will be required to have a SFFSC  Learn to Skate USA Membership. Memberships for the 2021-22 calendar year will begin on July 1, 2021 and expire on June 30, 2022.

As you begin registration, you will be prompted to answer "yes" when asked if you need an annual membership. You will only have to do this once for the 2021-22 Season. You will answer "no" once you have completed this step for the 2021-22 Season.

Additional Information

Helmets: Helmets are required for ALL skaters. Skaters are required to bring their own helmets.

Refunds: All registration and processing fees are non-refundable except in cases where Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club cancels classes. Exceptions in extreme circumstances may be granted by the Board of Directors on a case-by-case basis.

Because our software system is programmed to connect annual memberships and class registrations together, failure to pay for your membership will result in your child being left off all rostering.  Please make sure you pay for your membership to avoid this from happening.  We will not be able to add your child unless both membership and class registration is fully completed and purchased.

Helmets: Helmets are required for ALL skaters. Skaters are required to bring their own helmets.
