Overview:

The Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club’s Summer Skate Camp is for skaters ages 5-12 and beginner skaters to FreeSkate 3 level skaters.  Off-ice rotations will focus on building skills that could be applicable to skaters of any level while on-ice rotations will be geared towards developing the skills that are in your skater's “level”.  Skaters will be challenged.

Group Placement:

Group placement will take into consideration both age and skating level.  Skaters are able to request to be in the same group as a friend or sibling!  Groups will have between 8-12 skaters with one senior and one junior coach.

Cost:

$165 for the week

Includes:

  • On and off ice training
  • Participation in the end of the week exhibition
  • Craft materials
  • Daily snack

Off-Ice Rotations:

Jumps & Spins: In this rotation, skaters will build strength, flexibility, and control while also learning and practicing jumps and spins off-ice.  Coaches will utilize the off-ice jump harness to teach proper air position.

Team Building & Choreography: Skaters will grow closer to their group mates through participation in a variety of team-building activities.  Working as a team to solve problems is an important part of being successful in skating.  Skaters will also spend some time choreographing and practicing their exhibition routine off-ice.

Dance & Yoga: This rotation will give skaters the opportunity to relax while also building skills that are important for their skating journeys.  Many skaters use dance and yoga as ways to improve their strength and flexibility.

Crafts: Skaters will get to create unique crafts while also having the chance to rest during their busy mornings.  Crafts for the week include decorating a skating notebook, tie-dying a skate-drying towel, coloring skating pages, and creating decorations for the exhibition.

On-Ice Rotations:

Jumps & Spins: Skaters will learn and practice jumps and spins that are appropriate for their age and level.  For some skaters this may be their first introduction to jumping and spinning on the ice while others may be polishing their jumps and spins.

MITF/Footwork: Turns, edges, and other fundamental skills must be developed before skaters are able to advance to higher levels.  Skaters will focus on the turns, edges, or other skills that are in their LTS USA level.

Choreography/Artistry in Motion: In this rotation, skaters will be introduced to the Artistry in Motion curriculum and then work to choreograph a group program with the other members of their group to perform in the exhibition.

Practice & Games: Skaters will have 15 minutes of free skate each day.  Coaches will also lead skaters in fun group games at this time!

What will my skater get out of camp?

Our Shooting Stars camp will not only focus on building skating skills in a fun and exciting environment but also encourage each child to step out of their comfort zone, make new friends, and create lifelong memories.

Skaters will begin the week by setting goals for themselves with the guidance of their head coaches.  This process of goal setting and then working to achieve those goals (perhaps overcoming some obstacles along the way) will carry over to their life outside of skating.

Skating is a sport that pushes children to gain self-confidence, responsibility, and creativity.  Even in a short week, we hope that our skaters leave camp feeling proud of their accomplishments and driven to continue achieving their goals.

Our Staff:

Our coaches include high school and college students as well as other adults who have extensive experience working in our club’s Learn to Skate program.  We will also have junior coaches working alongside our senior coaches throughout the week.  Our coaches are all caring and compassionate individuals who are motivated to share their love for skating with others!  All junior and senior coaches hold a coaching certification through LTS USA and many have additional certifications through either ISI or USFS.  SFFSC coaches attend monthly training sessions and our camp coaches will attend additional training before the week begins.

Packing List:

We recommend sending your skater to camp in leggings (or other long pants) with a short-sleeved T-Shirt and tennis shoes.  This way they will stay comfortable, even for outdoor activities, but do not have to completely change before getting onto the ice.

Please send your skater with the following each day:

  • Warm sweatshirt or jacket (layers are always good!)
  • Gloves
  • Hat or headband
  • Long, thin, socks
  • Skates (we provide rental skates for those who don’t have any)
  • Water Bottle (optional-drinking fountains are available)
  • Hair tie

Registration deadlines:

Registration is due on July 1st, 2022.  After this date, a late registration fee of $25 will be applied.  If the camp is canceled due to low enrollment we will inform families by July 2nd, 2022 at the very latest.

ASPIRE MINI CAMP

This fun and instructive mini camp will introduce skaters and their parents to ASPIRE, Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club’s group lesson program for skaters ready to take the next step in their skating journey!

The Aspire Mini Camp is open to skaters in Basic 1-Freeskate 4 and will include both on and off ice instruction to foster your child’s love of skating and teach them new skills to get ahead in class! Skaters will be grouped by level.

For those whose skater already participates in ASPIRE, this camp will be a great opportunity for your skater to continue strengthening their skating skills that they are developing each week.  More time on the ice is always encouraged to speed up skill development.  Plus, this should be a fun day for ASPIRE skaters to get to know each other better while also getting the chance to meet new friends!

Please watch this page to find out when we will hold the next Aspire Mini Camp.
